“May 1784

‘ . . . with reference to the doctor’s diagnosis, I own to being less than satisfied concerning the nature of Sir Morton’s sudden death; it would seem to have been rather more, than less, unexpected. While an intemperate life of the kind led by Sir Morton might have led to an untimely demise, he had shown a robust constitution, and had displayed none of the symptoms usually associated with a weak heart. Likewise, the manner of his discovery, seated at the breakfast table, in a frozen position, with eyes fixed open as if at some distant horror, leads me to suppose some peculiarity in the manner of his demise . . .

‘After a call I made on the doctor who attended on Sir Morton I am more than ever convinced that the manner of his patient’s passing is as unsatisfactory to him as to myself, further, that the physician is perplexed, but cannot, or will not compromise his own reputation by attempting to explain the inexplicable. Something, however, clearly disturbs him, which he does not feel at liberty to disclose, and has only intimated to me his concern as to a trusted friend . . . ’ ”
